Vintage Marzi & Remy stoneware pitcher.

A beautiful West German salt-glazed stoneware jug by Marzi & Remy. c1960

This salt-glazed wine or beer jug is light blue in colour with cobalt blue decorative banding around the base and neck. The body is decorated with a scrolling design in vivid cobalt blue with light colour runs and smudges that give the jug wonderful character.

Anton Marzi & Simon Peter Remy founded their ceramics studio in 1879 in the town of Höhr, situated in the Westerwald, a low mountain range on the right bank of the river Rhine. The town was known for its ceramics industry and had been one of Europe's leading producers of salt-glazed stoneware pottery and ceramics since the 1500s. Marzi & Remy are known for their Stein (stoneware) products, many for serving beer and wine, and were in operation until 1994.

The pitcher is marked on the base with the raised Marzi & Remy 'MR' shield mark and the number 3108/02/00.

Approximately 19.5cm tall and 16cm wide from the belly of the jug to the handle.

Very good vintage condition with just a couple of very small nibbles to the base. Good, clean interior.

All our pieces have a past and may feature age-related marks which we believe add to their charm. If you have any questions about this item or would like to see further photographs, please do get in touch.
