Mason's ironstone china ginger jar.

A classic bulbous-shaped, lidded ginger jar by Mason's of England. The design on this jar is the Manchu pattern in green. Featuring a pretty, single colour, oriental floral scene. Often found in blue, this slightly rarer version is in green.

Ginger jars have their origins in the simple ceramic pots used to store and transport spices in ancient China. Over time their popularity has led to the jars being used as decorative pieces. This ironstone transferware version created by Mason's could be used functionally to store kitchen herbs and spices or as a tea caddy.

Approximately 16cm tall to the top of the lid and roughly 12cm at its widest point. The ginger jar opening is 6.5cm in diameter.

Stamped to the base 'Mason's Patent Ironstone, Made in England'. The maker's mark with this particular design of the crown and banner dates the jar to the early to mid 20th century.
Very good vintage condition without cracks or crazing to the body of the jar or the lid. There's a tiny nibble to the base of the jar and a couple of small colour imperfections from the manufacturing process (under the glaze). Overall lovely clean and bright condition inside and out.

All our pieces have a past and may feature age-related marks which we believe add to their charm. If you have any questions about this item or would like to see further photographs, please do get in touch.
