Vintage Briglin studio pottery coffee cups and saucers.
With their distinctive wax resist swirl pattern and glossy glaze, these beautiful vintage earthenware espresso size coffee cups are by Briglin Potteries.
There's a muted-brown colouring and milky-white interior to each cup and saucer base while the wax resist swirl pattern on the cups is in a dark brown, almost black colour. The handle sits low on the side of each cup, beginning just a few millimetres above the base.
In many ways ahead of their time, the two founders of Briglin Potteries were Brigitte Goldschmidt (later Appleby) and Eileen Lewenstein - the name Briglin is derived from their two first names.
The pottery began in a basement studio on London's Baker Street in 1948 with the aim of creating domestic products that were well designed, attractive and affordable. The business was commercially focused and employed studio staff and assistants at a time when many other studios were managed by a single potter.
Each cup is 7.5cm tall and 6cm diameter, each saucer is 12cm diameter.
Excellent condition without crazing, there is a very tiny chip to the base of one saucer.
All our pieces have a past and may feature age-related marks which we believe add to their charm. If you have any questions about this item or would like to see further photographs, please do get in touch.
